CAIRO – 25 June 2017: Six people, including young children, were injured when a car crashed into a crowd gathering to perform Eid prayers in the United Kingdom’s Newcastle on Sunday, British news sources reported shortly after the incident.

"Police inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened but, at this time, it is not believed to be a terror incident,” police announced around 11:30 a.m.

A 42-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the collision, which happened around 9am Sunday morning.

Asif Anwar, 29, told the Newcastle Chronicle that the woman “lost control of the car and hit some people,” including two children.

“Very tragic incident this morning at Eid Namaz in Newcastle,” Imran Khalil told the Newcastle Chronicle shortly after the incident. “A car rammed pedestrians as we came out from our prayers.”

Sunday marks the first day of the three-day Eid al-Fitr holiday, which comes at the end of the holy month of Ramadan during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.
