CAIRO - 24 June 2017: Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb has strongly condemned a failed terrorist attack on Mecca's Grand Mosque.

In a telephone conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman bin Abdel Aziz, Tayeb said Al Azhar stands by the side of Saudi Arabia in fighting and uprooting terrorism.

He praised the vigilance of Saudi troops, who were able to counter the terrorist plot.

Tayeb also congratulated Prince Mohamed on his new post.

Prince Mohamed said he greatly appreciated the important role played by Al Azhar in promoting the teachings of Islam.

He was particularly pleased with efforts exerted by the grand imam of Al Azhar to counter extremist ideologies.
