CAIRO – 19 June 2019: In light of its continued efforts to encourage all Sudanese parties to resume dialogue, Egypt will chair a meeting for the foreign ministers of the regional partners of Sudan on June 20 in Addis Ababa.

According to a Wednesday statement issued by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Hafez, The meeting will be held in the African Union (AU) headquarters. Ethiopia, Chad, Congo, Central African Republic, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, Eritrea, and Egypt are all participating in the meeting.

The meeting is held according to recommendations of the consultative summit of Sudan regional partners that was called for by President Abdel Fatah El Sisi on April 23 in Cairo. The meeting is part of regional efforts to reach an agreement on the current transitional period in Sudan after the ouster of President Omar Bashir.

According to the state information service's (SIS) statement on the consultative summit, President Sisi asserted the consensus of the parties participating in the summit on the determination and courage shown by the Sudanese people in their peaceful efforts to reach their legitimate aspirations and the launching of a comprehensive process of peaceful democratic transition which establishes development and prosperity in the country.

In his closing address before the consultative summit, held at Ittihadiya Palace, Sisi said the discussions reflected a common will to exert collective efforts to help the brotherly Sudanese people based on the relevant principles and aims of the African Union to establish security and stability in Africa.

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday in Ethiopia, aims at continuing efforts and affirming a collective African will to maintain and preserve Sudan’s stability and unity.

On June 14, President Sisi received a phone call from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, as they discussed the latest developments in the region, including Sudan.

During their call, Sisi asserted Egypt's support to the choices and will of the Sudanese people, reiterating Egypt's full respect to Sudan's sovereignty and rejecting any interference in its internal affairs.

Sisi also stressed the need for intensifying international efforts to help Sudan end its current crisis and maintain its stability and security to achieve the best interests of the Sudanese people.

Last February, Sisi headed to Addis Ababa where he formally received the presidency of the African Union from his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame at the inauguration of the 32nd summit of the AU.

The summit which was inaugurated under the theme “The year of refugees, returnees, and international displaced persons - towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa” witnessed discussions on the African Peace and Security Council and the implementation of the AU road map and its capability to end civil armed conflicts on the continent by the end of 2020.

On June 12, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry hailed Egypt's deeply-rooted ties with African countries during a ceremony held in commemoration of Africa Day, which marks the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963.

In a statement for spokesperson Ahmed Hafez, he said that the minister explained that this year's ceremony is of special importance due to Egypt's 2019 chairmanship of the African Union, noting that Egypt focuses on achieving sustainable development and establishing peace and stability throughout the continent.

Hafez's statement reported that Shoukry highlighted the need to promote inter-African cooperation to attain the aspirations of African peoples.
