CAIRO - 4 June 2019: A lawmaker at the House of Representatives revealed that Egypt suffers from a shortage of baby formula for children with metabolic disorders.

Deputy Head of the Health Committee at the Parliament Enas Abdel-Halim has submitted an urgent letter to the Cabinet concerning baby formula for children with metabolic disorders, saying the families complain about aformula shortage.

The formula is available only in El Demerdash Hospital for Children and a few health care centers in Cairo, he added.

Metabolic disorder is a genetic disease wherethe newborn infants cannot break down food and milk they take in. However, adults also could suffer metabolic disorder.

In 2016, Egypt suffered severe shortage of subsidized baby formula nationwide due to some companies’ monopoly. Since then, the Armed Forces has been pumping locally-produced milk formula into the market at decreased prices.
