A fire broke out at the main train station in Cairo's Ramsis

CAIRO - 27 February 2019: Egyptian National Railways ordered halting rail traffic after a fire broke out at the main train station in Cairo's Ramsis. The fire has caused deaths and injuries, a security source and local media said on Wednesday.

Photographs on social media showed clouds of black smoke billowing from the building in central Cairo.

The fire engines managed to control the fire, and ambulances arrived to transport the wounded.

Sources told Egypt Today that the fire occurred after a train entered to the station, surpassing the speed and collided with the buffer stop. The Egyptian National Railways said the incident occurred after a train declined and crashed into platform number 6.

Health Minister Hala Zayed headed to al-Helal hospital to follow up on the condition of the injuries, ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

Megahed said that the official number of casualties will be announced very soon.

Attorney General Nabil Sadek ordered an urgent investigation, and the disclosure of the causes of the incident.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli, Minister of Social Solidarity Ghada Wali, and Minister of Transportation Hesham Arafat arrived at the scene. Madbouli ordered to provided the injured with required care.
