CAIRO – 25 February 2019: The Egyptian Embassy in Washington congratulated Rami Malek for winning the Oscars for Best Actor on Sunday night for playing the legendary Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody".

“Rami Malek has made Egyptians happy and proud tonight as the first Egyptian American to win an academy award. Congrats, Rami. Egyptians are proud of you!” The embassy stated in its tweet.

“I am the son of immigrants from Egypt, a first-generation American... and part of my story is being written right now. I could not be more grateful to each and every one of you, and everyone who believed in me for this moment. It’s something I will treasure for the rest of my life.” – Malek said in his accepting speech.

Malek has won all the awards preceding the 91st Academy Awards: The Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and SAG. Malek is an Egyptian-American actor, who was born in Los Angeles on May 12, 1981, to Egyptian immigrant parents, Saeed Malek and Nelly Abdel Malek.
