CAIRO – 24 February 2019: Tunisian Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui said on Sunday that the 1st Arab League-European Union Summit, which kicked off in Sharm el Sheikh today, “is of great importance as it is the first of its kind.”

The council of Arab foreign ministers had agreed in March 2016 to hold this summit, he noted.

"The participation of 50 countries reflects the importance of the summit, which will serve as a platform for dialogue between Arab and European leaders," said Jhinaoui, who is part of a high-level Tunisian delegation led by President Beji Caid Essebsi.

EU President Donald Tusk co-chairs the meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Participants in the summit will probe issues of mutual interest, especially those related to development, the Tunisian top diplomat said.
