CAIRO – 25 August 2018: Egyptian security forces thwarted an imminent terrorist attack against a checkpoint along Arish Coastal Road, North Sinai, killing four militants on Saturday, a security source told Egypt Today on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.
A group of militants tried to use rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) rifles against the security forces at the checkpoint, but their attempt failed, he added.
The forces also seized 10 improvised explosive devices, four guns, a number of home-made bombs, RPG rifles, three explosive belts, a surveillance camera, and a cell phone.
On Aug. 13, six terrorists were reported dead during security raids in 6 October city, Cairo.
Several proactive measures and procedures were launched by the security forces several months ago facing terrorist group’s threats especially with the approaching anniversary of the sit-in of Raba'a al-Adawiya on Aug. 14.
Egypt has been struggling for years to contain terrorist activities in Sinai.
Many military operations have been carried out by army and police forces, killing hundreds of militants and building a buffer zone along the border with Gaza, so that the Egyptian authorities can curb the flow of militants and weapons infiltrating through underground tunnels.
