CAIRO – 23 August 2018: Social media users expressed their anger at an Egyptian woman police and the manner with which she dealt with sexual harassers during the celebration of Eid al-Adha on Thursday.

Shot by Dot Masr newspaper, a video showed the Egyptian women police dealing with the three sexual harassers at Giza’s zoo, releasing the harassers without holding them accountable.

Most Facebook users commented on the video and the harassers, which include an elderly man, and reiterated that they should have been punished, criticizing the way the police dealt with him.

The video shows that three female officers and a male policeman asked the harassers to stop harassing children to else face a sentence of three years in prison.
A Facebook user commented “‘Don’t do it again? Are they [the harassers] children? What are you doing?”. The user added, “They should be held accountable.”

Another user called on the Minister of Interior to see how the police dealt with those harassers. Other people said that the police personnel, who appeared in the video, should be held accountable.

Fifteen cases of sexual harassment in Giza’s Zoo during the three days of Eid al-Adha have been reported, said the National Council for Women (NCW) in a statement on Thursday.

During Eid El-Fitr holiday, Egypt witnessed an intense deployment of female police officers to combat sexual harassment in streets and public areas. The female officers were heavily deployed at several places in the capital where sexual harassment could possibly occur due to overcrowding, such as the ticket windows of parks and cinemas, Corniche al-Nile and downtown Cairo.

Girls and women can file harassment complaints via email at omb.office@yahoo.com. They can also call the complaints office on 01007525600 and the hotline 15115. Furthermore, they can communicate with the office through the NCW official Facebook page or they can personally visit the office. Above all, they have to file a case against the harasser at the nearest police station.
