CAIRO – 25 July 2018: U.S. secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, lauded Egypt's efforts to achieve a Palestinian national reconciliation and addressing regional issues to promote stability, Egypt’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Ahmed Abu Zaid said on Tuesday.

Egyptian minister of foreign affairs, Sameh Shoukry, received a phone call from his U.S. counterpart Pompeo, in which they discuss various aspects of Egyptian-U.S. relations in both political and economic areas, as well as a number of issues of mutual concern.

Abu Zaid added that Pompeo asserted his country’s keenness to strengthen its strategic relationship with Egypt and its commitment to support Egypt politically and economically through different cooperation mechanisms, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Egypt.

For his part, Shoukry stressed Egypt's interest to boost its relations with the United States and to continue communication, coordination and consultation on latest developments in the Middle East and ways to promote peace and stability in the region.

Pompeo invited Shoukry to visit Washington in the first week of August to continue consultations and coordination on the development of bilateral relations. The Egyptian minister said he is looking forward to visit Washington soon.

Earlier this month, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov speaks to Egypt Today in an exclusive interview about Palestinian rival factions reconciliation, Egypt’s role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the two-state solution and the “deal of century”.

Mladenov affirmed in his statements, that Cairo government has always been, and still is, a vital and key player amid the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, adding that Rafah border crossing, which Egypt opens regularly to ease the people’s suffering in Gaza, is considered to be a “lifeline” for Palestinians.

He added that The United Nations is doing its best to back Egypt’s efforts to reach complete reconciliation among Palestinian factions. He affirmed that Egypt has done a lot already to reach stability and decrease violence.

Previous reconciliation was signed in Cairo in October 2017 between Palestinian rival factions Fatah and Hamas in order to achieve more stability within the Palestinian land and authorities.

In September 2017, the Hamas movement announced the dissolution of the administrative committee in the Gaza Strip, inviting the Government of National Reconciliation to assume its duties and hold general elections. The movement affirmed it would comply with the Social Reconciliation Accord signed in 2011.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that there is no country as vital to the Palestinian cause as Egypt due to its historical and political position in the region. “Egypt has an opinion, a position and an interest in the Palestinian cause,” said Abbas.
