CAIRO – 18 July 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi affirmed Wednesday that Egypt offers strong political desire to reach the final results in the investigations into the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni, who was killed in Cairo two years ago.

This comes during Sisi’s meeting with the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, in the presence of Mahmoud Tawfiq, Minister of Interior, Abbas Kamel, Head of General Intelligence, and Italian Ambassador in Cairo Giampaolo Cantini.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency spokesperson Bassam Radi, the meeting discussed ways of enhancing bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy at various levels in several fields.

The statement added that the meeting tackled some points of view on a number of international and regional issues of common concern, especially the latest developments in the Libyan issue and illegal immigration across the Mediterranean. The meeting also discussed ways to enhance joint efforts and bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism.

For his side, Salvini stressed the depth and strength of the relations between the two countries, praising the cooperation between the two sides at various levels, especially in the economic relations field.

He also praised the cooperation of the Egyptian authorities in Regini’s case to reach the truth and the perpetrators who committed the crime.

On January 25, 2016, the 28-year old Italian postgraduate student Regeni disappeared in Cairo, only for his dead body to be found on February 3 alongside the Cairo-Alexandria highway, bearing signs of torture and beating.
