CAIRO - 17 May 2017: Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly had a stroke when he heard the Cairo Criminal Court’s sentence against him, his lawyer, Mohamed el-Gendy stated Tuesday.

During a phone call with “Huna Al Asema” TV show, Gendy affirmed that he does not know the current place of his client, and he was surprised that he missed the verdict hearing on Tuesday.

The Cairo Criminal Court rejected Tuesday the challenge submitted by Adly against the seven-year sentence over charges of illicit gains.

Mubarak’s iron-fisted interior minister is officially fugitive now, since he violated his in-house arrest order.

A security source told Egypt Today that security forces were dispatched to locate and arrest Adly, who is enrolled in the travel-ban list, to serve his court sentence.

On April 15, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Adly and two other Interior Ministry officials to seven years in prison over charges of illicit gains.

The defendants were convicted of using their influence to illegally acquire 2.4 billion EGP ($132 million) when Adly was in office.

On April 26, the General Prosecution had ordered the arrest of Adly to serve his sentence. In 2014, he was acquitted along with six of his aides over charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the January 25 revolution in 2011.
