CAIRO - 2 June 2018: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit strongly condemned on Saturday the US veto against a UN draft resolution on providing protection for Palestinian civilians.

The Al chief praised the intensified efforts exerted by Kuwait, the current Arab member at the UN Security Council, as well as the Arab block in New York to obtain such resolution.

Meanwhile, Abul Gheit expressed "disappointment" over stances of Britain, Ethiopia, the Netherlands and Poland which abstained, said AL spokesman Mahmoud Affifi.

The Al chief also expressed regret over the UNSC failure to assume its responsibilities in endorsing measures to stop the escalations committed by the Israeli authorities against the Palestinian citizens.

Abul Gheit pointed out to the hundreds of Palestinians who have been killed and injured by Israel on the Gaza border over the past few weeks.

The US persistence on approaching such policy to obscure the issuance of any resolution to end the Palestinian bloodshed, will only encourage Israel to continue its unjust and abusive policies that contradict international legitimacy.

Abul Gheit reiterated the AL full commitment to support the Palestinian cause, terming it as the 'nation's central case" and protect the rights of the Palestinian people, topped by their right to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem (Al Quds) as its capital.
