CAIRO – 10 May 2017: The Central Veterinary Administration of the Ministry of Agriculture has adopted precautionary measures for eight zoos, including Giza Zoo, to protect the animals against potential overheat complications.

The administration formed veterinary committees in the process to examine and keep animals in good condition by feeding them the green fodder together with iced foods to keep their body moisture and ward off dehydration.

Antibiotics, drought treatment solutions, sprinkling fresh water every two hours, were among the measures taken in all of the zoos, especially in Giza Zoo as it contains the largest number of animals. The enactment of such measures will be sustained till the heat wave is over.

According to Dr. Mohamed Ragae, Head of the Public Zoos Central Administration, such precautionary are vital in efforts at revamping the image of the zoo.

''The newly enforced animal safety measures are in line with Giza Zoo's renovation works that included cleaning efforts and restoration of buildings.

It is an attempt to promote the facility's cultural appearance and achieve the prerequisite requirements to qualify the Giza Zoo to rejoin the African Association of Zoos and Aquaria as the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums after Egypt’s exit in 2004'', says Dr. Ragae.
