CAIRO -23 April 2018: The European Union (EU) stressed the importance of supporting energy sector in Egypt in order to transform Egypt into a regional energy hub, according to a Egyptian-EU joint statement on Monday.

The statement was issued on the occasion of visiting EU delegation, headed by European Union Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete.

They also agreed on boosting cooperation in renewable energy and technological, scientific and industrial fields.

The visit will contribute to enrich the EU-Egypt Sustainable Energy Business Forum and boost the joint action in the period between 2018 and 2022 in several fields, noted the statement.

The government welcomed the EU high-level visit chaired by Canete to Egypt from April 22 to 24, added the statement.

Egypt's unprecedented achievements and its strategic location qualify it to be a major player in energy supply to the Euro-Mediterranean region and in this regard, the EU values Egypt's effective participation in the energy sector, said the statement.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Sherif Ismail witnessed the inking of a memorandum of understanding between the two sides to foster strategic partnership in energy field.

The memorandum of understanding is considered to be an important development in the fruitful relations between Egypt and the EU. It also reflects the joint understanding for the importance of fostering bilateral relations in the energy field, read the statement.
