CAIRO – 4 April 2018: In preparation of the 2018 UN Climate Change Conference, or “COP 24”, the co-chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA) Sarah Baashan stressed the need for Saudi Arabia and Egypt to have a unified vision on climate change issues.

In a statement to the Middle East News Agency in Kuwait, on the sidelines of her participation in the 10th Regional Workshop on Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries in China, Baashan asserted that there is ongoing coordination and communication between Cairo and Riyadh.

This coordination ensures that both countries will share the same stance and vision concerning global and regional issues regarding climate change. Egypt is currently presiding over the G77 Group that includes 130 countries, as well as the African group, while Saudi Arabia assumes the chairmanship of the Arab Group.

The Saudi official highlighted that Egypt is a leading country in managing and streamlining negotiations, adding that the Arab agenda will deliberate on ensuring the equal treatment of countries fighting climate change, and reaffirming commitment to the Paris Agreement.

During the meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC) in 2017, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi asserted Egypt’s full commitment to all international agreements and treaties that address climate change.

He reiterated that the African countries are the most vulnerable to the negative consequences of climate change, and stressed the need to support the financially-strained African nation-states to be able to respond to the consequences of climate change.
