CAIRO - 24 February 2018: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit slammed on Saturday the US announcement that it will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in mid-May 2018 in coincidence with the 70th anniversary of the 1948 Palestinian exodus.

In a statement, Abul Gheit described the US move as one of provocative and dangerous decisions taken by the US Administration since December.

"The US announcement to move the embassy in mid-May shows a full bias towards the Israeli side," he said, warning that the decision could hamper peace negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis.

The transfer of the US embassy to Jerusalem violates UN resolutions no. 476 and 478 of 1980, he pointed out, stressing that all Arab countries are determined to stand up to repercussions of this provocative decision.

At the end of his statement, Abul Gheit stressed that the US decision will not change the status quo in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Abul Gheit is scheduled to travel to Brussels Sunday on top of an Arab ministerial delegation to hold talks with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Maria on the Palestinian cause, according to his spokesman Mahmoud Afifi.

The Arab delegation will try to persuade more world countries to recognize the Palestinian state and find alternatives to settle the Palestinian cause.
