CAIRO – 15 February 2018: The Egyptian army revealed the latest developments of the ‘Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018’ that is targeting terrorist hotspots in the Sinai Peninsula, in a press conference held on Thursday.

During the conference, broadcasted on state television, the army's spokesperson Tamer al-Rifai spoke on the outcome of the operation that started last Friday. The conference was attended by representatives of the navy, air forces, armed forces operations authority of the Sinai operation and representatives of interior ministry.

El-Refai stated that this operation targets “North and Central Sinai, in addition to other terrorists areas in the Delta of Egypt and the Nile valley." He added that the armed forces are carrying out training maneuvers in all strategic directions and enhancing operational capabilities to secure the Egyptian border.

He stated the main aims of this comprehensive operation, such as purging the terrorist strongholds and pursuing in the areas stated and enhancing comprehensive security forces to prevent smuggling and infiltration of arms and drugs which affect the security and stability of the country. El-Refai stated that this operation aims to create an appropriate security environment, and promote economic conditions that attract foreign investments.

El-Refai announced the main outcomes of the Military operation, saying that the army managed to kill 53 takfiri elements and detain four others. 675 additional escaped and suspected criminal were detained.

In the statement, Refai said that 57 Four wheel vehicles and 88 motorcycles used by terrorist were destroyed. Moreover, security forces destroyed 378 terrorist hotbeds, weapons and ammunition stores in Sinai. Among these hotbeds was a media center used by takfiri elements.

Refai announced the discovery and destruction of 177 explosive devices and up to 1500 kilograms of TNT explosives, including C4.

At last, he stated that the military forces managed to discover and destroy three holes on the border strip of Sinai. In addition, they succeeded in the destruction of 35 farms of Banjo plants and seized 8.3 tons of narcotic substances.

The army's spokesperson answered the reporters questions regarding the results of the operation and whether the army achieved its target.

When asked about securing the economic objectives of the Mediterranean sea, El-Refai stated that the navy forces secure and protect the Egyptian territorial and economic waters in the Red and Mediterranean Sea.

“Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018" comes within the armed forces ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Sinai that are aimed at eliminating terrorists and Takfiri elements, and eradicating their breeding grounds and hotbeds.

Since the ousting of ex-Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated President Mohamed Morsi, Egypt has seen growing waves of extremism washing over the society and spawning numerous deadly attacks. Among these attacks was the terrorist attack that hit Al-Rawdah Mosque and left more than 302 Friday prayers congregates dead in late November.
