CAIRO – 12 February 2018: Egypt’s security forces destroyed 60 targets, killed 12 terrorists following exchange of fire, arrested 92 criminals and seized 20 vehicles that terrorists used in carrying out terror acts, according to the fifth statement released by the Egyptian Armed Forces on Monday.

On the fourth consecutive day of the full-scale security operation_ Sinai 2018_launched on Friday, the Egyptian military and security forces destroyed 30 hideouts used by militants to carry out their attacks against military and police personnel as well as civilians, added Armed Forces Spokesperson Tamer El Refa’i in the fifth statement.

The statement revealed that 23 explosive devices had been discovered and defused and seven farms of marijuana were burned, in addition to possession of more than a half ton of drugs ready for immediate usage. Four vehicles carrying ammunitions and arms and 27 motorbikes were targeted by the Air Forces, Refa'i continued.

Egypt launched a large-scale security operation early Friday morning, involving land, sea and air forces, in various areas across Egypt, including North Sinai, the Western Desert and the Nile Delta region. “The comprehensive security operation Sinai 2018 is targeting terrorist and criminal elements and organizations,” said army spokesman Col. Tamer el-Rifaai in a televised statement no. (1) on Friday.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi authorized the army chief of staff to use “all brute force” against terrorism, and he gave security forces a three-month deadline to restore stability to North Sinai.

Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said the Sinai 2018 Operation is a result of a series of military efforts and investigations since 2013.

The ongoing Sinai 2018 security operation has been a definite outcome of military endeavors and investigations that have been taken since 2013, Egypt’s presidential spokesperson Bassam Radi stressed in televised statements on Friday.

He added that the ongoing security operation is a normal “outcome that succeeds several successful operations and strikes launched by police and military forces since 2013.”

The Minister of Higher Education declared Friday the suspension of study at Arish and Sinai universities and all higher educational institutes in Sinai for one week, until next Thursday.
