President Sisi heads to Ethiopia to take part in AU summit

CAIRO - 26 January 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi will head on Saturday to Addis Abba to participate in the 30th African Union (AU) summit, due to convene on Sunday, said Egyptian Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Radi in a statement on Friday.


“The president's participation in the African Summit comes in the light of Egypt's keenness to strengthen and develop relations with all African countries and to effectively participate in efforts of strengthening the mechanisms of joint African action for the African peoples,“ Radi said in the statement.


President Sisi will head the meeting of the The Peace and Security Council of the African Union as Egypt is currently chairing the council in January, Radi added. The meeting theme titled “A comprehensive Approach to combat cross-border threat of terrorism in Africa.”


Also, President Sisi along with African leaders will participate in a closing session to discuss the ways of AU construction reform. Moreover, he will discuss an African free trade agreement.


The 30th AU summit at the level of leaders and heads of state will convene on January 28 and 29, while the preparatory meetings started on January 22.


This year’s AU summit will be titled “Winning the fight against corruption: a sustainable approach to Africa's transformation”. This title is considered as the AU’s slogan in 2018.



On January 30, 2017, President Sisi attended the opening session of the 28th African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he signed the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption.

On July 16, 2016, President Sisi participated in the 27th African Union Summit which was held in Kigali, Rwanda.
