CAIRO – 24 January 2018: Divorce cases saw an increase in November 2017 in comparison to November 2016, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) stated in its monthly bulletin on Wednesday.

According to CAPMAS’ monthly bulletin, divorce cases increased to 17,400 in November 2017 compared to 16,600 in November 2016, an increase of 4.8 percent.

The bulletin also stated that the number of marriage contracts reached 70,500 in the same month in 2017 compared to 69,500 in 2016, an increase of 1.4 percent.

Marriage contracts declined during the last three months of 2017; marriage contracts reached around 98,800 in September, 75,800 in October, and 70,500 in November.

By the end of 2017, CAPMAS held a conference to announce population growth statistics in Egypt for the year 2017. The event was attended by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, members of parliament, and representatives of civil society, businessmen, media personnel, and officials in charge of the population counting processes.

It announced that 68 percent of Egyptians are married, 65.9 percent of married people are males and 70.2 percent are females. Three million women are widowed representing 10.7 percent of Egyptian women while 2.3 percent of Egyptian men are widowed. Around 471,000 women are divorced representing 1.7 percent, whereas 118,000 women below the age of 18, the legal age, are married.

In 2017, researchers proved that a case of divorce occurs every four minutes, and total divorce cases per day may exceed 250.

There are various causes of divorce that can include money troubles, incompatibility between spouses, drug addiction and the interference of family and friends in married couples’ life.
