CAIRO – 17 April 2017: One man was killed in a building collapse Monday, while excavating the site to search for archaeological artifacts, Essam Badawy, Head of the 6th of October City Council, said in a statement.

The building is located in Ebni Beitak national residential project in 6th of October City.

“The Civil Protection Services were unable to save the man and the workers involved in the excavation were detained,” the statement read.

The worker reportedly fell into a 20-meter-deep hole dug under the building.
Two men were killed in a similar incident in February 2017, when a house-owner in Assiut governorate was digging for artifacts beneath a building.

Ten suspects were also arrested in early March 2017 after being accused of illegal archaeological excavation under a residential building in 6th of October City.
Two others were captured months earlier in Old Cairo neighborhood.
