CAIRO – 15 April 2017: The chairman of the Libyan House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh Issa, praised Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi’s outspoken support to the Libyan people and the national army, saying that Sisi “has saved Libya.”

In an interview on “On Live” TV channel Friday, Issa stated that the Egyptian president’s position supports the legitimacy of Libya and affirms that the Libyan people are the ones entitled to choose their rulers.

Sisi asserted Egypt’s eagerness to assist Libya in attaining stability during a meeting with Fayez al-Sarraj, prime minister of the Government of National Accord of Libya, last month.

Egypt’s president also referred to the importance of the parliament’s role in protecting the unity of Libya and the necessity of reaching a consensus among all political factions.

Libya has been in turmoil over the past six years, since the overthrow of the country’s long-time ruler Muammar Gadhafi in 2011.

The Government of National Accord was formed in 2016 and recognized by the United Nations as the legitimate government in Libya; the National Salvation Government had been formed in 2014 as an alternative ruling body.

Militants and extremists have also taken over parts of Libya.

Issa further criticized Italy’s “biasness towards the National Salvation Government and the groups that have overturned on legitimacy,” affirming that Libya refuses any intervention in its internal affairs.
