CAIRO – 14 April 2017: Egypt’s Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation, has toughened security at Metro stations through the end of Easter and Sham el-Nessim celebrations, a security official said on state TV Thursday.

The new measures, which are being implemented Friday, should ensure the safety of passengers and guarantee their arrival at their destinations.

Two bomb attacks targeted two cathedrals in Tanta and Alexandria on Palm Sunday, resulting in the deaths at least 44 people and the injury of others. Islamic State affiliates have taken credit for the attacks.

Following the attacks, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi declared a three-month State of Emergency in Egypt.

Sham el-Nessim is an Egyptian spring festival that falls yearly on Easter Monday.
