CAIRO – 31 December 2017: The Military Court referred on Sunday eight Muslim Brotherhood defendants to the Grand Mufti for assassinating Wael Tahoun, the former head of the notorious Matareya Police Station.

They were accused of joining Hasm group, who claimed responsibility for a number of deadly attacks on security forces, as well as assassination attempts on public figures over the past year.

In 2015, two masked gunmen shot Tahoun and his driver, while they were in Tahoun’s car, leading to their death.

Since the former President Mohamed Morsi was ousted in 2013, violence against police has escalated. Several other Interior Ministry personnel have been murdered in 2013.

The most recent attack against police is Al-Wahat attack. A Hard battle was fought by the Egyptian forces against militants on Friday, October 20, on the Giza-Al Wahat Road. Seventeen security personnel were killed and fifteen others were injured.
