Member of ‘2nd Nasr City Terror Cell’ given 7-year prison term

CAIRO – 30 December 2017: Cairo Criminal Court sentenced a ‘Second Nasr city Terror Cell’ member to a seven-year rigorous imprisonment and five years of police surveillance for belonging to the outlawed group.

The group is believed to have targeted police recruits in the past.

The General Prosecutor had charged the defendant with multiple charges, including illegally possessing weapons, plotting attacks against state institutions, endangering national peace and social unity.

Since the ouster of the former Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated President Mohamed Morsy, the country has been witnessing growing waves of extremism that have washed over society and spawned numerous deadly attacks. Most recently, a terrorist attack hit Martyr Mina church in Helwan on Friday, leaving ten dead and nine injured.
