A suicide bomber blew himself up in front of Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria

CAIRO – 9 April 2017: Pope Tawadros II, head of the Coptic Church, is unhurt following an attack outside Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria, Pope Tawadros' secretary Angelos Isaac announced Sunday.

The Pope was inside the church presiding over Palm Sunday celebrations when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the cathedral.

Preliminary Health Ministry reports announced 40 injured and 11 casualties. Police officer Emad Al-Rekaiby died after attempting to apprehend the suicide bomber as he was trying to approach the church.

The explosion took place four hours after a blast ripped through Mar Girgis Church in Tanta, north of Cairo.

Egypt's Ministry of Health announced that 30 people were killed and another 71 injured at the Coptic church in Tanta.

Churchgoers were attending a service to celebrate Palm Sunday when the blast went off.
