CAIRO – 22 December 2017: Al-Azhar praised the UN General Assembly resolution on Thursday which considers the U.S. decision regarding Jerusalem as "null and void" and must be cancelled, Al-Azhar said in a statement issued on Friday.

The resolution which was approved by 128 states, expressed the unity of the international community to reject the U.S. decision over Jerusalem which contradicts human rights and world conscience, the statement added.

Al-Azhar renewed its call on the U.S. to withdraw the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to commit to the objectives of the United Nations, such as the maintenance of international peace and security, stressing that the Arab and Palestinian identity of Jerusalem is not subject to change or tampering.

More than 120 countries defied President Donald Trump on Thursday and voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor. A total of 128 countries backed the resolution, which is non-binding, nine voted against and 35 abstained. Twenty-one countries did not cast a vote.
