CAIRO – 5 April 2017: The Museums of Islamic Arts and Textile in Cairo are hosting a special celebration for Orphans Day on April 6, including museum tours and workshops for over 100 children from different orphanages, according to a statement by the Ministry of Antiquities.

The initiative comes in light of the ministry’s commitment to further Egyptian museums’ social role, said Elham Salah, head of the Antiquities Ministry's Museums Section.

The textile museum event, under the title “Make Them Happy,” includes a guided tour for children from Gamaleya Orphanage followed by art wokshops, competitions and performances on Moez Street in Islamic Cairo.

The Museum of Islamic Arts will host 125 children from different orphanages. It is organsing a number of activities and a choral performance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.

“These events connect the different sects of Egyptian society to the museums and encourage them to visit,” Salah said, adding that this contributes to spreading awareness among the population.

Orphans Day is celebrated in Egypt on the first Friday of April. It first started almost a decade ago and orphanages nationwide are accustomed to holding festivals, parties and artistic performances, as well as inviting businessmen and organizations to participate in the special day for orphans.
