CAIRO - 6 December 2017: Protests broke out in the West Bank on Wednesday following official recognition by U.S. President Donald Trump of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel through a televised speech from the White House in Washington, D.C.

Hundreds of local residents of Tubas, in northeastern West Bank, gathered on Wednesday evening to protest the “racist” decision, according to the statement of Mahmoud Sawafta, Fatah’s secretary in the West Bank.

“The U.S. blatantly declares its bias towards the occupation and its government, forgetting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people,” Sawafta told Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Mosques in the city called on citizens through its speakers to mobilize at Martyrs Square, while church bells rang in protest against the outrageous declaration.

Trump also announced during his televised speech re-locating the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The U.S. president asserted that this decision is not in any way a departure from efforts to establish lasting peace in the region.
