CAIRO – 22 November 2017: A UN committee has approved a resolution backed by Egypt on the impacts of terrorism on human rights.

The resolution, forwarded by Egypt’s delegation at the United Nations in New York, was largely adopted by members of the Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Issues Committee of the UN General Assembly.

It comes two weeks after President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi announced that fighting terrorism is a key human right.

Sisi made the announcement during the inaugural speech of the World Youth Forum (WYF) in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el Sheikh.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid said the resolution reflects Sisi’s vision on the link between terrorism and human rights.

The decision pointed out to the destructive impacts of this malicious phenomenon on the political, civilian, economic, social and cultural rights, which in turn could hinder development, destroy the basic infrastructure and harm tourism industry, Abu Zeid added.

The resolution stressed the state’s key role in protecting all people living on its territories from terrorism, through taking all effective measures to combat terrorism and pursue culprits, he noted.

Furthermore, the decision underlined the importance of fostering international cooperation and exchanging experience in the fight against terrorism, he noted.

The resolution shed light on the importance of expressing solidarity with the victims of terrorism and their families, as well as putting into consideration the misuse of means of communication in promoting the extremist thought and violence, he said.

It urged formulating an effective counter-terrorism speech and propagating the values of tolerance, dialogue and peace among peoples, in addition to preventing terrorist groups from recruitment and cutting off their sources of funding, Abu Zeid confirmed.

The decision focused on the four pillars of the UN strategy to combat terrorism, which calls for handling the roots of terrorism and extremism, building states' capabilities, stepping up the UN’s role in countering terrorism and respecting the principles of the international law on human rights, Abu Zeid emphasized.
