LONDON - 13 November 2017: The Syrian army launched a new military offensive to retake the rest of the border Syrian city of Boukamal in Deir Ezzor governorate from the hands of Daesh militant group, according to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The army recaptured the whole border city on Thursday but Daesh militants managed to retake half of the city in a counterattack on Friday.

The army managed to advance towards the western part of the city, the last remaining key stronghold of Daesh group.

The military advances by the Assad forces and Syrian Democratic Forces dealt a severe blow to Daesh militant group, leaving it with fragments of its self-declared caliphate that once stretched from the center of Syria to the outskirts of Baghdad.

The developments in Boukamal, located on the strategic highway from Baghdad to Damascus, sets the stage for the end of Daesh control in Syria.
