CAIRO – 6 November 2017: Al-Azhar strongly condemns the shooting that took place at the Baptist church in Texas on Sunday that resulted in multiple casualties.

“These criminal attacks are heinous as they take innocent lives, violate the sanctity of the houses of worship and threaten the security of a state,” stressed Al-Azhar.

Al-Azhar extended its condolences to the families of the victims and the people of the United States of America.

The shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, a small community about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of San Antonio, news media reported, adding that the shooter was killed.

The shooter walked into the church shortly before noon - at a morning service that, witnesses said, was normally attended by some 50 people - and opened fire. A two-year-old was among the wounded, the Dallas Morning News website reported.
