CAIRO - 19 October 2017: Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva praised Thursday the Islamic culture, saying it has a major effect in Portugal.

Silva, who is currently on a visit to Cairo made these remarks in a meeting with the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed el Tayeb.

The Portuguese minister said his country respects and appreciates Islam which is part of Portugal's national fabric.

He underlined his country's keenness to enhance relations with Al Azhar, which reflects the true Islam that is far from extremism and terrorism.

In addition, he expressed his appreciation to Al Azhar's role in achieving peace within the Egyptian society, commending Tayeb's speeches to the world and his efforts in religious discourse.

The Portuguese minister praised the great effect of Al Azhar in spreading awareness among young Muslims about the threat of extremism and correcting the misinterpretation of Islam around the world.

On the other hand, Tayeb stressed Al Azhar's keenness to establish bridges of communication with religious leaders and followers around the world, as well as opening dialogue channels with the west.

He also confirmed Al Azhar's willingness to boost cooperation with Portugal in achieving peace and stability in Europe.
