CAIRO – 13 October 2017: Yemen's ambassador to Egypt, Mohamed Ali Marm, expressed his country's support for Egypt's nominee in the UNESCO’s director-general post, Moshira Khattab, refuting alleged reports of Yemen’s support to the Qatari candidate.

Marm stressed that the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed its envoy in the UNESCO to vote in favor of Egypt, adding that Cairo shares strong ties with Sana'a in different fields.

Khattab, who served as a top aide to former Egyptian First Lady Suzan Mubarak, came second in the race with 18 votes on Thursday, to be equaled with France’s candidate, while Qatar’s Hamad Abdul Aziz al-Kawari, who has been promoted with the help of lobby groups, collected 22 votes, according to Egypt Today's reporter in Paris.

The UNESCO’s executive board will cast a voting between the Egyptian and French candidates early Friday to determine who will run for the fifth round of elections with Qatar's al-Kawari.

Earlier on Thursday, the Chinese candidate, Qian Tang (five votes), announced his withdrawal from the race in favor of the Egyptian candidate.

The winning candidate must obtain 30 votes. He will then be presented to the agency’s general assembly for final approval.
