Draft law provides jobs for prisoners during, after penalty

CAIRO – 10 October 2017: Member of Parliament Mahmoud Atteya has drafted a law to provide prisoners with jobs during and after their punishment periodto make a living as part of their rehabilitationand inclusion in society.

The MP clarified that the jobs provided can vary from the agricultural sector to the craft sector.

Former Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb told the press in 2015 that the number of prisoners in Egypt amassed to8,000 who wereeither serving a penalty, or in custody upon the orders of the Public Prosecution while still on trial.

In 2014, the Prisons Authority revealed that each prisoner’s food, clothing, healthcare, and facilities such as electricity and water supply cost between LE 1,500 - 2,000 ($85.08 - $113.44) monthly.
