Two sentenced to life, 2 acquitted in Air Defense Stadium incidents

CAIRO – 24 September 2017: The Cairo Criminal Court issued life imprisonment sentences to two persons accused of being involved the incidents of the Air Defense Stadium and acquitted two persons. Other also found guilty of being involved in the incidents were with heavy imprisonment ranging between two to seven years on Sunday.

Three of the accused were sentenced to heavy imprisonment for 10 years and paying a fine of LE 10,000 while five were sentenced to heavy imprisonment for seven years. At the same time, two of the accused were sentenced to three years and one of them was sentenced to one year in prison.

Before the beginning of the league match between two Cairo clubs, Zamalek and Enppi in 2015, 20 people have been killed when police tried to ban fans from entering the stadium by firing teargas and shotgun pellets on ticket holding fans, as claimed by the survivors.

On the other hand, police said that they began firing when ticketless fans tried to break in, and that the deaths were caused by the ensuing panic.

The prosecution has referred 16 persons for the incidents and proved that the Muslim Brotherhood members were behind the incidents of the stadium to destabilize Egypt.
