CAIRO – 23 September 2017: Former general guide of the banned Muslim Brotherhood Mahdi Akef passed away on Friday in Al Kasr Al Ainy hospital downtown Cairo after a long struggle with disease, his daughter Alia, posted on her Facebook page.

The 89-year-old Akef was sentenced to 25 years in prison over charges of “murdering and attempt to murder during clashes that took place outside the brotherhood headquarters in Mokattam in Cairo before the June 30 Revolution in 2013.



Egypt’s Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Friday evening that Akef, who was transported to the hospital from prison, died of “acute circulatory failure.”

The statement added that Akef was admitted to Torah prison hospital on September 9 in 2015 to receive medical treatment. On his requet Akef was transported to Al Kasr Al Ainy hospital, on January 19 2017, to complete treatment as he was suffering from acute pneumonia, bile and inflammation.
