11 defendants in ‘Giza Terrorist Cell’ referred to Grand Mufti

CAIRO - 9 September 2017: The Giza Criminal Court referred on Saturday 11 defendants to the country’s Grand Mufti over the “Giza Terrorist Cell” case. The court set October 22 as a deadline to issue its verdict.

The prosecution charged the defendants with establishing a group intended to incite violence, calling for the overthrow of the state constitution and preventing state institutions from carrying out their activities.

The defendants also face charges of violating personal freedom rights, providing the group with material and financial aid, vandalizing public property, attempting to kill an officer in the General Directorate of the Giza Security Forces, vandalizing a police car, stealing weapons and manufacturing explosive devices.

The case no. 5192, which is publicly known as “Giza Terrorist Cell,” goes back to 2015. It includes 26 defendants, 21 one whom were arrested pending investigations, and five have been tried in absentia.
