CAIRO – 4 September2017: Head of the Libyan National Accord Presidential Council Fayez al-Sarraj received French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian Monday morning in Tripoli, along with several French officials.

During their visit, the French delegation affirmed their country’s support for the current Libyan government, adding that Paris is keen on achieving stabilization in Tripoli as was agreed between al-Sarraj and then-French President Francois Hollande during their meeting held in Paris in September 2016.

In a statement issued by the Libyan Presidential Council Monday, Le Drian praised al-Sarraj’s efforts and attempts to reach national reconciliation between all the various Libyan factions, adding that he is scheduled to meet with all of them during his visit.

From his side, al-Sarraj welcomed Le Drian’s suggestion to hold a French-Libyan economic forum in Tripoli before the end of the current year.

Le Drian’s visit to Libya comes after a month of signing a conditional agreement between al-Sarraj and Military Commander Khalifa Haftar on a ceasefire, in preparation for the 2018 parliamentary and presidential elections.

The conditional agreement, however, did not include many of the other Libyan political factions, according to Reuters.
