CAIRO - 1 September 2017: Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta (Fatwa House) posted on its Facebook page on Friday, the first day of Eid al-Adha, warning people of harassment, describing it as a great sin.

During most national holidays in Egypt, including Eid al-Adha, incidents of sexual harassment increase significantly, as people go out onto the streets to celebrate the occasion.

Dar Al-Ifta’s post on Facebook condemned sexual harassment, describing it as a “great sin and one of the most heinous and ugly acts in the Islamic Sharia,” while describing those who do it as people who bear “sick souls and despicable whims,” who perform such act “in a beastly manner and without mental or human control.”

On their Facebook page, Dar Al-Ifta also featured an option for people to update their Facebook profile picture with an image from Dar Al-Ifta, saying “I am against harassment”.

The National Council for Women, headed by Maya Morsi, launched an operations room at the Women's Complaints Office on the first day of Eid al-Adha. It operates around the clock during the Eid al-Adha, to receive complaints of harassment against women and girls.
