CAIRO – 21 Aug 2017: The American University in Cairo (AUC) has announced that Malak Zaalouk, a professor of practice and director of the Middle East Institute of Higher Education, has been selected as the head of the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning, making her the first Egyptian to be elected to the post.

Zaalouk was also the first Egyptian woman to join the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in 2012. The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg is a leading institution in promoting lifelong learning philosophy.

"There are three main areas of the Institute's work: adult education, literacy eradication and basic skills, and the UNESCO Institute is a great institute at research and policy,” Zaalouk said. “It supports governments in their quest for the policies they need to implement lifelong learning in nation-states.”
