CAIRO – 18 August 2017: Egyptian politician Mohammed Refaat El-Saeed, former chairperson of the National Progressive Unionist Party (Tagammu), has passed away Thursday aged 84 at his home in Cairo.

The Egyptian presidency mourned the death of the prominent politician in a statement late Thursday.

"Egypt has lost today a valuable politician who enriched the Egyptian and Arabic left-wing with his political writings and analysis that tackled a long period of Egyptian and Arab history," the president said in a statement.

The statement said that Saeed played a vital role in enriching the political life in Egypt, stressing that his contributions in the history of political parties will remain deeply engraved in the mind of the country.
