CAIRO – 15 August 2017: A policeman was killed Tuesday after he was shot dead by unknown militants who opened fire at him in south Arish city, in North Sinai, according to medical sources.

Sources said that the policeman called Ayman Mahmoud, 42 years old, and he was announced dead after suffering serious injuries.

Similar attacks have targeted hundreds of police and army forces in the northern tip of Sinai Peninsula since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013 following mass protests against his ruling.

On the other hand, the army leads a prolonged fight against extremists in North Sinai, claiming the lives of hundreds of militants, seizing thousands of weapons and destroying many tunnels used for smuggling drugs, persons and arms.

The last crackdown on Saturday managed to arrest a takfiri in addition to destroying eight hideouts containing explosive materials.
