CAIRO - 14 August 2017: Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces Mahmoud Hegazi met Sunday with UN special envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame.

The meeting reviewed the Egyptian efforts exerted with the various parties to formulate the mechanisms needed to reach a political settlement of the Libyan crisis based on Libyan consensus and taking into account the national constants and the concerns of all parties, and ensuring the establishment of a democratic and unified Libyan state, to be free of extremism and terrorism and provide security and welfare to the Libyan people.

The two sides also exchanged views on all efforts exerted at the international and regional levels for the benefit the Libyan people.

Hegazi affirmed Egypt's keenness on achieving a settlement in accordance with the legal framework provided by the Skhirat political agreement, under the umbrella of the United Nations and in accordance with the Libyan consensus, with all efforts to preserve the country's national unity, security and territorial integrity, alleviate the suffering of the Libyan people, and support their legitimate institutions.

For his part, Salame hailed the Egyptian efforts exerted over the previous period, and stressed the importance of communication and cooperation with Egypt and the various parties concerned with the crisis in the coming period, especially as the United Nations and the Secretary-General a give a high priority for the Libyan crisis during the current phase.
