CAIRO – 26 July 2017: Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit underscored the importance of being posted periodically on the various contacts between UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura with the Syrian, regional and international parties concerned in the Syrian crisis.

The AL chief made the remarks Wednesday during his meeting with UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of a larger consultative one chaired by Abul Gheit that comprised the permanent representatives of the AL member states on the ongoing contacts as regards the Syrian crisis and the outcome of the Geneva talks.

Meanwhile, Abul Gheit asserted the AL’s firm stance on the Syrian crisis which is shown in four points.

The first of which is supporting any agreement or effort aimed to end the bloodshed of Syrians and helping deliver humanitarian aid to besieged areas in the conflict-torn country.

The second and third points are rejecting any arrangements that lead to Syria's division, in addition to ending the presence of terror groups and foreign fighters respectively.

As for the fourth point, Abul Gheit emphasized that any temporary arrangements taken to stop the bloodshed in Syria are not to replace a political settlement of its crisis in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution no. 2254.
