CAIRO – 21 July 2017: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle on a ring road in Fayoum governorate, south of Cairo, killing a conscript and injured three others, Egyptian security officials said Thursday night.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, according to security sources.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement released right after the incident that security forces were stepping up efforts to arrest attackers, who reportedly hid in a farmland near the highway.

The forces sealed off the area and launched a manhunt for the attackers, the statement said.

In a similar incident early July, unknown gunmen shot dead several members of the Egyptian security forces in Badrshin, Giza.

Hundreds of police and army personnel have been killed in targeted bombings, drive-by shootings and other attacks orchestrated by Islamist militant groups since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. (Contributed by MENA)
