CAIRO – 20 July 2017: Ministry of transportation plans to pump LE 30.760 billion ($1.7 billion) into Greater Cairo’s metro’s first and second lines development works, besides other number of railway development projects that are currently underway.

Metro is set to run on another third rail by 2020; other fourth and fifth lines scheduled to be constructed and added to the greater Cairo’s railway network.

As per a financing agreement has been signed between Egypt and the French development in May, National Authority for Tunnels’ heads further discussed on Thursday the areas of mutual cooperation with the French ambassador to Egypt on development of the railway networks, including the renovation of Alexandria’s trams.

Ministry’s development plan includes bringing more air-conditioned train wagons into effect at Metro’s second line and development of Central control and power systems.

Minister of Transport Hesham Arafat signed on Tuesday the memorandum of understanding (MOU) of the sixth metro line that will be designed by a Canadian company.

This comes as part of the Transportation Ministry’s plan to develop railway networks across the entire country. The project will reduce congestion and save energy, according to Presidential Spokesman Alaa Youssef.
