CAIRO – 10 July 2017: Egypt’s border guards managed to seize 91kg of hashish, 4,615 kg of marijuana, and 585,000 anesthetic tablets between June 24 and July 8, 2017, according to the army spokesperson.

In cooperation with the naval forces, border guards managed to intercept 464 illegal immigrants, in addition to seizing smuggled goods. Those goods included smuggled mobile phones, weapons, munitions, medicine and cattle.

Moreover, two smuggle tunnels were also discovered and destroyed along the border line of Sinai.

This came within an intensified campaign initiated by the Egyptian armed forces to crack down on illegal immigration.

In late 2016, the Parliament passed a legislation criminalizing illegal immigration and smuggling.
