CAIRO – 08 July 2017: Egypt praised efforts by the city of Benghazi in fighting terrorist organizations and extremist groups in a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.

This came following the announcement on Thursday by Libya's army chief, Khalifa Haftar, that Libyan forces have succeeded in regaining full control over the second biggest city in Libya from a terrorist group after three years of occupation.

The statement said Benghazi is one of Libyan cities that have recently succeeded in defeating terrorism.

The ministry further praised the role of the Libyan army for this success, saying it is a successful step on the path to purging Libyan cities of extremist groups.

“Egypt trusts the ability of the Libyan people to root out the phenomenon of terrorism and to end the presence of terrorist organizations throughout Libya; east, west and south.” the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry statement affirmed Egypt's “unwavering insistence on addressing the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism in all its forms and manifestations through concerted international efforts to create an integrated vision to prevent funding terrorism, check its spread and stop means of promoting it, as it poses a threat to world peace and security.”
